Ultrafiltration (UF) filters out oils, grease, bacteria, viruses, and suspended solids such as particulate, within a size range of about 0.01 to 1 µm. UF is widely used in wastewater treatment, often using polymeric membranes. However, ceramic membrane ultrafiltration systems have some advantages and are now commoditised. Most UF systems employ polymeric membranes, especially those in municipal water treatment. However, polymeric UF membranes struggle in harsh environments and with highly impaired water.
Ceramic UF membranes have historically been viewed as expensive, but open the UF application range to highly turbid wastewaters, harsh chemical environments, oil & grease removal, slurries, and more. They can take a beating and performance can be recovered, if operated correctly. They have recently become more widely available at lower cost.

With different capacity and filter specifications available, it is suited for many applications. XtremeUF is available with nominal repeatable capacities of 100 and 600 m3/day and filtration specifications of 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.2 µm.
