With the advent of ultra-high-pressure reverse osmosis and the growing importance of brine management, modernized chemical softening systems can enable economic ultra-high recovery reverse osmosis, minimizing RO brine volume, disposal costs, and reliability risks.

SilicaSelect: Silica Extractor
SilicaSelect removes silica, and as a positive side effect it de-saturates gypsum (calcium sulfate). It is a smaller, simpler version of our BrineRefine chemical softening product.
SilicaSelect is a standard size, skidded product, capable of treating 120 m3/day (22 GPM). Sound small? It’s meant to be. SilicaSelect is intended to treat side streams and enable incremental recovery improvements.
What SilicaSelect Can Do
If you have 600 m3/day of silica-saturated RO brine, one SilicaSelect skid helps you to boost recovery and lower brine volumes by 20%. That’s good enough in many cases to bring, say, an evaporation pond back into hydraulic balance. Don’t over-treat and over-pay when you can treat a side stream with SilicaSelect with minimized costs.
SilicaSelect removes silica through a high pH precipitation process, with solids filtered to 0.1 µm, making SilicaSelect RO water friendly. If gypsum is also super saturated (>2,550 mg/L), held in dissolved form with anti-scalants, SilicaSelect will relieve the anti-scalants and remove gypsum, further enabling recovery gains. All solids emerge as a solid filter cake for ease of disposal.
Enhance a Project With SilicaSelect
SilicaSelect helps you to achieve water balance and cost savings by enhancing recovery and reuse. Use it to:
- Bring an evaporation pond into balance,
- Improve RO recovery to lower disposal costs.
- Extract silica from cooling tower flows, which can increase the number of water cycles, reducing both make-up and blowdown water volumes.
For smart operation and compliance monitoring, combine SilicaSelect with our ScaleSense real-time sensor for silica measurement in the combined blended stream.

Boost RO Recovery With a Side Stream Process
SilicaSelect can remove silica and calcium sulfate in a side stream, reducing silica in the RO feed and increasing RO recovery with minimal, cost-effective intervention. This treats to the right level with a minimal treatment load & optimized blending. Let us help with an energy and mass balance for your system, peak shaving silica from RO brine prior to recycling.
Achieve Incremental RO Recovery
SilicaSelect can trim silica levels prior to a secondary RO, enabling your next increment in recovery improvements and producing less brine waste in a cost-effective manner. Seeking a higher recovery solution? We can help you with that too, as well as generate a comparative analysis for your decision making.

Cooling towers are used by industrial plants to reject waste heat to atmosphere. A portion of the cooling water is blown down after a number of cycles of concentration, before the ions and metals reach their scaling limits. This blowdown requires management.
Coal ash pond water may require treatment as leached pollutants from ash pond water pose human health and ecological risks. Consider membrane concentrators, minimal liquid discharge (MLD), and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technologies to reduce brine volumes from treating leachable pollutants.
Real-time measurement provides prompt feedback for controls. A real-time sensor can help to optimize your process, reduce risk, and minimize operational and maintenance demand. Saltworks has developed a new real-time sensor—that is simple and robust—to operate in the high-TDS range.
